My superstitious uncle once told me, “better put a dent in your car before someone else does”. He believed that every car inevitably gets a dent so if you put a dent in it first, somewhere inconspicuous it would ward off the “dent demons” from getting your car. He never asked, “how can I avoid car dents” because he believed that was impossible.

Clearly, this is nonsense if not amusing, but there are actual ways to limit the chances of you getting a dent on your car. The first list below is how to avoid them when you are parked and the second list below is how to avoid them while you’re moving.

Stationary Car Dent Avoidance (Dents while parked)

  1. Park far away from the entrance to where you are going – Most people in a rush park closer and if they are in a rush, they may not be as mindful of your car as they park. Besides, the longer walk is healthier.
  2. Park closest to a curb – limits the door dings that could potentially happen to only 1 side.
  3. Park near well-kept cars – If people take good care of their cars, they are less likely to be careless and dent your car.
  4. Park in a spot that receives less traffic – Law of probability works in your favor when you do this.
  5. Do not park under a tree – especially if it has noticeable seeds, fruits or other debris that may fall.
  6. Avoid parking near ball courts – a runaway ball might find itself leaving you a with a bill most ballers won’t own up to.
  7. Educate the children – From bikes to balls to toys and all, children that aren’t aware are more likely to give your car more than a bruise.
  8. Park on the top floor in garages – the extra couple minutes is worth decreasing the chance of a dent.
  9. Cover your car – This does not prevent dents but it shows others you are at least caring for your car and are more likely to be careful.

Moving Car Dent Avoidance

  1. Be aware of your surroundings – If you aren’t sure what is around you, drive much more cautiously.
  2. Avoid driving near cars that seem in a rush or that already need a lot of bodywork– this just goes without saying. There is probably a reason these cars are already so badly damaged.
  3. Drive with ample space around you – distance is a dent’s worst enemy. Dents can’t happen without contact.
  4. Don’t underestimate the garbage can or any other objects you may hit – you would not believe how common dents caused by garbage cans and those yellow or red barrier poles happen.
  5. Be a defensive driver – ‘nuff said.
